What are the Benefits of being a Surrogate?

Benefits of being a Surrogate

Surrogacy is an emotional and extraordinary journey. This unique journey is not only exciting for the individuals who are having the child, but also for the selfless person who has chosen to become a surrogate. There are many benefits that come from making the decision to transform someone’s life through becoming a surrogate.

What does it mean to be a Surrogate?

Being a surrogate means that you have chosen to carry a baby for another individual or couple who can not have a baby on their own. There are two different types of surrogacies: traditional and gestational.

Traditional Surrogacy

Traditional Surrogacy is a type of surrogacy where the surrogate is artificially inseminated or through IVF. This means that the surrogate’s own eggs are fertilized by the intended parent’s or donor’s sperm. This is a less common form of surrogacy because there can be legal issues after the child is born.

Gestational Surrogacy

Gestational Surrogacy is a type of surrogacy where the surrogate is impregnated with an embryo made from a donor’s eggs and the Parent’s sperm. This means that the surrogate has no genetic relation to the baby. This form of surrogacy is more common with the sucess of IVF, and it makes legal parentage less complicated.

Surrogacy Arrangements

It’s important to consider what kind of relationship you want with your Intended Parents before you complete your profile and enter into  the surrogacy contract. The type of future relationship with the surrogate and parents depends on the wishes of both the intended parent(s) and the surrogate. In some cases, both parties decide that they want to be active in each other’s lives. This means that the surrogate would later be able to interact with the child. In other cases, the surrogate may receive updates such as letters and pictures from the intended parents about the baby. Other individuals or couples opt to not keep the line of communication open at all after the birth of the child. This process is unique to every arrangement and it is therefore important that the surrogate and the intended parent(s) determine the type of relationship that they are looking to have with each other, before the process begins.

Emotional Benefits

There are many benefits of being a surrogate mother. One of these benefits includes the emotional component of being a surrogate. When you choose to become a surrogate you are giving an individual or couple the gift of having a child. This is a selfless act that leaves both parties feeling an immense amount of joy and love.

Another emotional benefit to becoming a surrogate is the relationship that you decide to have with the intended parents. If you decide to have a relationship with the parents and the child, this can be a life altering experience. Not only will you have developed these new relationships, you will also be able to see exactly how much your selfless act influenced others. Many surrogates want to give the gift of parenthood to another family because they know what a joy it is to be a parent themselves.

Financial Benefits

There are also financial benefits of being a surrogate mother. The average total compensation which includes benefits and expenses is $46,850 and up. The compensation number is based on several different factors. For example, a first time surrogate in an eligible state without a surrogacy exclusion would receive $35,000 and an experienced surrogate’s rates start at $40,000 and go up from there. This base compensation is paid to the surrogate in 8 installments over the course of the pregnancy.

Surrogates also receive a monthly allowance in lieu of itemized reimbursements. This compensation is $200/month and is meant to cover expenses such as mileage, childcare during appointments, postage, pregnancy tests, etc. This monthly allowance begins at the signing of the contract and ends either one month after birth or when the surrogacy contract is terminated. If the intended parents are international, the compensation is $250/monthly and if the surrogate becomes pregnant with twins they will receive $250/$300 beginning in the second trimester.

The surrogate will also receive their lost wages and other compensation depending on time needed to travel and necessary involvement of their spouse. Plus, at 13 weeks gestation, the surrogate will receive $800 for a single pregnancy and $1000 for twins, as a maternity clothing allowance. All medical expenses will be paid, including $250 when medication is started and $750 for the fee of an embryo transfer procedure. All of our surrogates receive free legal advice including estate planning documents and custom tailored life insurance policies. After the birth, intended parents may ask that the surrogate pump milk, which would be compensated at a rate of $1/ounce, plus all pumping supplies, shipping and pump rental. As an added bonus, all of our surrogates also have the option to partake in our Surrogate Retreat valued at $750, or receive an extra push gift!

There are many different types of compensation depending on the unique situation of the surrogacy journey. Surrogates receive benefits in excess of $46,000, and have no expenses out of their own pocket. You can help your family while also helping create another’s family.
