Surrogacy Journey – Intended Parents Need Support Too!

support
You’ve made a wonderful decision – using a surrogate to help you have the family you’ve been dreaming of. Wherever you are in the surrogacy process, you need all the support you can get. Of course, you’ll be talking to your family and friends about what you’re going through. The emotions, the worry about finding the perfect surrogate, the anxiety of embryo transfer, and perhaps apprehension about the financial commitment. No matter how understanding and supportive your family and friends can be, you need more support – support from those going through the same emotions and experiences that you are.

In-person support groups

If you live in a large city, you may be able to find support groups that you can attend in person. Ask the surrogacy agency you’re working with for their recommendations for in-person support groups in the area where you live.

Online support groups and forums

There are several support groups and forums that use an online format, which let you connect with other intended parents around the world. Baby Center is an online community that has an Intended Parent Support Group. Another online community can be found on Facebook. All Things Surrogacy is a closed group for intended parents and surrogates to ask questions and share their experiences. There are many other online support groups – do your research to find one you feel comfortable with. Simple Surrogacy also has a facebook group for their Intended Parents where questions are encouraged!

Positive and encouraging support

When choosing a support group for intended parents, whether it’s in-person or online, look for positive and encouraging words from the other members. While it’s okay to talk about the ups and downs of becoming intended parents, and the emotions that you’re feeling, a support group should boost you up and help you through the surrogacy process. Look for a group where members also share the excitement and joy of becoming parents.

Don’t believe everything others share

You’ve heard the caution many times – not everything online is true. The same can be said of online support groups. Not everything you read will be accurate. Don’t rely on your support group for information about the surrogacy process. What’s true for some intended parents may not be true for you. For questions about your own surrogacy situation, always talk to your own surrogacy agency. Our surrogate coordinators will check on your surrogates weekly to insure the pregnancy is going smoothly, and they are available 24/7 should a problem or issue arise. The surrogacy process is complex, and requires experienced attention throughout to ensure a smooth journey to parenthood.  We are here for all parties involved!

Enjoy the journey

The surrogacy process is a wonderful journey for you as the intended parents and for your chosen surrogate. This is the time to reach out to support groups and online forums, so you can openly and honestly talk about your surrogacy process, your journey through the pregnancy as intended parents, and the unique questions you’ll have as non-traditional parents to your beautiful child.
