With so many major current events, it’s hard to keep track of news coming out on topics outside of the Covid-19 pandemic, natural disasters, and political upheaval, which is why we’re bringing you surrogacy new updates from 2021! We’ve compiled a list of some of the exciting announcements regarding surrogacy and IVF that have happened around the world at nine months into 2021.
In May of 2021, the US ended the policy of denying citizenship to children born abroad via IVF or surrogacy, among other assisted reproductive means. There is still more progress to be made, as the child must still be born to married parents, at least one of which must be a US citizen, and have biological ties to at least one parent. Regardless, this was a great win for surrogacy and worth celebrating! Source
In July of this year, an Israeli Supreme Court annulled part of a law which excluded gays from having children via Surrogate! While the decision was made in 2020 to allow LGBTQ+ couples and individuals to employ the use of a Surrogate to have a child, after a new law only extended that right to single women, the government was given a year by the courts to change the law. With parliament making no moves to ammend the law to give surrogacy rights to gay couples, the Supreme Court stepped in with the decision that the change in the law would take effect within 6 months. Another step in the right direction for our LGBTQ+ friends and family! Source
Also in July, Tan France and his husband Rob France welcomed their baby boy via Surrogate. While no one surrogacy is more important than another, we love seeing celebrity surrogacies in the news as it expands awareness and acceptance of this incredible practice– and especially for LGBTQ+ individuals and couples!
These are only a few of the positive surrogacy news stories to make headlines in 2021; we’re looking forward to the progress the remainder of 2021 brings in expanding access to surrogacy for couples and individuals across the globe. Of course, we’re also celebrating each successful surrogacy birth story along the way– each and every one of them being newsworthy in our books!
