If you’re thinking about becoming a parent through surrogacy, it is important that you know what the process entails. Whether you’ve decided to be a single parent, are a member of the LGBTQ community, or are dealing with fertility issues, there are two methods of surrogacy that you can utilize in order to have a baby of your own. This blog will discuss traditional vs gestational surrogacy as options for having a baby.
Traditional Surrogacy
Traditional Surrogacy is a type of surrogacy that uses either artificial insemination or In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Artificial insemination is the process where sperm is inserted into a uterus without intercourse. IVF is a process where the egg is fertilized by the sperm outside of the body. The egg is then placed in the uterus. The difference here between Traditional and Gestational Surrogacy is that in traditional surrogacy the surrogate provides her own eggs. This is a less common form of surrogacy because it comes with more legal risks due to the genetic connection the surrogate has to the child.
Gestational Surrogacy
The Gestational Surrogacy process involves using IVF, but the surrogate’s eggs are not used. The eggs are harvested from either the intended parent or a donor and then fertilized by the father’s sperm or a donor’s sperm. This embryo is then placed inside the surrogate and the pregnancy process begins. This is different from traditional surrogacy because the surrogate has no genetic relationship to the baby. This makes the process much simpler and lessens the chances of legal issues after the child is born.
