Can You Be a Surrogate If Your Tubes Are Tied?

Can-You-Be-a-Surrogate-If-Your-Tubes-Are-Tied
Are you considering becoming a surrogate mother? Have you had your tubes tied and wonder if you can still help others fulfill their dreams of starting a family by becoming a surrogate? Simple Surrogacy, like all surrogacy agencies, does have certain requirements that prospective surrogate mothers must meet before qualifying to be a surrogate. If you are wondering if you can still be a surrogate mother after your tubes have been tied, read on.

What Happened Medically When My Tubes Were Tied?

Having your tubes tied is also known as a medical procedure called tubal ligation. This is a type of permanent birth control in which the fallopian tubes are surgically cut, blocked or tied to prevent future pregnancies. It is often performed after a woman gives birth, if she wishes to ensure that she will not become pregnant again. If you opted to have your tubes tied after giving birth to your last natural child, it was likely because you were finished having a family of your own.

Can I Still Be a Surrogate If My Tubes are Tied?

Fortunately, even if you have had a tubal ligation, you can still be a surrogate mother through Simple Surrogacy! We use a surrogacy process that involves gestational surrogacy and in vitro fertilization. Because this procedure does not require a surrogate to use her own eggs, it is not necessary for you to have functioning fallopian tubes in order to be a surrogate mother. You are simply “lending” your functioning uterus to the intended parents to allow them to utilize it so that their baby can grow.
As a matter of fact, some surrogacy agencies prefer to use surrogate mothers who have had their tubes tied.  Then, there is no chance that the surrogate mother will become pregnant with her own child during the surrogacy process. So having your tubes tied can actually be a bonus if you are planning on becoming a surrogate mother!

How is In Vitro Fertilization Performed?

During In Vitro Fertilization (also known as IVF), the eggs (which are obtained from an egg donor or the intended mother) are fertilized with the sperm (obtained from a sperm donor or the intended father) in a laboratory, to create an embryo. About three to six days after its creation, this embryo is then implanted into gestational surrogate mother’s uterus. The pregnant surrogate then carries the child until it is born.
Because of the IVF procedure, the baby that you will be carrying as a surrogate mother will not be genetically related to you at all. As a result, having functioning fallopian tubes is not at all relevant, nor is it required, if you wish to become a surrogate mother.
There are few potential side effects involved in IVF, the most common being that you might experience slight cramping and/or bloating from the procedure. Most women tolerate the IVF procedure well, however. You will have been fully screened medically by Simple Surrogacy before being accepted as a surrogate mother, so any potential medical problems that would have contraindicated IVF will already have been ruled out by the time IVF occurs.

If I Want to Be a Surrogate Mother, How Long Will the Process Typically Take?

Simple Surrogacy will require you to meet certain requirements prior to being accepted as a surrogate mother. One of them is that you must be between the ages of 21 to 40. Another is that you must have successfully given birth to at least one child of your own.
We will also go through a lengthy matching process, usually taking from one to three months, to match you, the surrogate mother, to the intended parents. Once matched, the legalities and screening processes are undertaken, which takes another one to three months to complete. If you are accepted as a surrogate mother by Simple Surrogacy and are approved to start an IVF cycle, you will be placed on medication for three to four weeks prior to the transfer of an embryo to your uterus. After that, as we all know, it will take nine months for the baby to be born!
Another consideration that you should think about if you are pondering becoming a surrogate mother is that of your own protection. Working with an agency like Simple Surrogacy will make sure that your rights as a surrogate mother are protected throughout every step of the process. Additionally, you will be ensured of being matched to the best possible intended parents. Simple Surrogacy will also handle your financial compensation, which starts at $30,000 for new, first-time surrogate mothers.

Are There Health Risks to Being a Surrogate Mother?

Carrying a surrogate pregnancy is much like carrying a natural pregnancy, with the same risks involved. Your surrogate pregnancy will likely be even more closely monitored than your natural pregnancy was, as more professional eyes will be upon you and the baby until his or her birth. Therefore, your surrogate pregnancy is likely to be even safer than your natural pregnancy.
Again, there are some slight risks to having IVF performed, as noted above. However, as you will have been thoroughly medically screened by the time IVF is taking place, you will be in tip-top shape and less likely to encounter any types of medical problems.
