How Much Does Surrogacy Cost in California?

How-Much-Does-Surrogacy-Cost-in-California
Whether you are considering becoming an intended parent or pursuing the process of becoming a surrogate mother, you have likely realized that surrogacy costs can vary widely from one state to the next. As we have mentioned before, Simple Surrogacy is able to offer intended parents competitive costs when compared to other surrogacy agencies due to our Dallas, Texas location. Likewise, we are able to offer surrogate mothers’ favorable compensation. When you are examining surrogate costs in other states, however, you might be shocked to notice the vast differences. One state that stands out in terms of the higher costs of surrogacy is California.

California is a Very Surrogacy-Friendly State

Many people look to California as a “model” surrogacy state as its laws are quite surrogacy-friendly. In California, all types of intended parents, regardless of sexual orientation or marital status, are encouraged to pursue surrogacy. Because of this great appeal for surrogacy services in California, however, costs to intended parents can be much higher than surrogacy costs they may encounter in other states. Surrogate mothers can also expect greater compensation for their services in California, since they are in shorter supply and higher demand.

How Much Will I Pay as an Intended Parent in California?

Of course, fees vary from one California surrogacy agency to the next, as well as from one individual surrogacy case to the next. However, it is possible to estimate an average cost for surrogacy services in California. Typical Agency fees in California start at $40,000 and go up from there. Depending upon the agency, these fees might not even include things like medical and psychological screening of the surrogate mother and criminal background investigations of all parties. Fees for legal services vary from one agency to the next and can easily total $10,000. If intended parents must pay a surrogate mother’s health insurance premiums, this can range from $10,000 to $15,000. Intended parents must also pay for their surrogate’s travel arrangements, life insurance policy, any medications necessary during the surrogacy process, compensation for the surrogate’s lost wages, and other medical fees not listed. These fees can quickly add up to $10,000 or more. When all is said and done, it is estimated that intended parents in California will pay from $125,000 to $185,000 for the surrogacy process.

How Much Can I Earn as a Surrogate Mother in California?

Surrogacy is highly valued in California as surrogate mothers are in great demand. Therefore, it follows that surrogate mothers in California can expect to be paid well. On average, first-time surrogate mothers in California can expect to earn a base pay of at least $50,000. This pay rate increases depending upon the number of successful pregnancies you have had and number of times you have successfully been a surrogate. If you are carrying multiples, the fee is greater, with many agencies paying $5000 per extra baby carried. If you must have a C-section, you are usually paid an extra $3000 to $5000 for pain and suffering. You will also be paid for lost wages, at your hourly rate, if and when you cannot work due to fulfilling your terms of your surrogacy contract, being ordered to bedrest by a physician, or missing work time for pregnancy-related appointments. Your spouse or partner will also be paid at his or her hourly rate for missing work time due to attending pregnancy-related appointments. Your monthly health insurance premiums will be paid by the intended parents (if you have a “surrogate-friendly” policy). Finally, you will be paid for unforeseen or unexpected circumstances, such as testing, pregnancy termination, and other unexpected medical problems that may arise. These circumstances are typically compensated up to $10,000.
