Bachelors Turn To Surrogates When Biological Clocks Tick

An increasing number of single men are exploring surrogacy as a path to parenthood when the traditional route of starting a family with a partner is not an option. Recent media coverage, including a story on the Today show, highlights this trend, with our co-founder Stephanie Scott featured as an expert in the field.

Single Men Pursuing Parenthood Through Surrogacy

Dr. Conrad Cean, a 43-year-old pain specialist from New York City, exemplifies this modern approach to family building. Nearing 40, he recognized his biological clock was ticking and wanted to start a family, even without a partner. With the assistance of IVF and a gestational surrogate, he became the proud father of twins, Konrad Fritz II and Kennedy-Josephine Marie. Cean is now considering expanding his family further.

Cean shared with Today, “I grew up in a very close family with two sisters, parents in Queens, and cousins. We have always been tight-knit, and I always wanted children.” His story resonates with many men who, despite not being in a relationship, desire to experience fatherhood.

Technology Expands Options for Single Fathers

According to Dr. Philip Werthman, director of the Center for Male Reproductive Medicine and Vasectomy Reversal in Los Angeles, the desire to be a parent transcends sexual orientation and relationship status. “For these men, they are getting older, they have the resources and the love to give, and they want to go ahead. Technology gives them the ability to have children outside traditional means,” Werthman explains.

IVF and gestational surrogacy make it possible for single men to have biological children, providing options that were largely unavailable just a decade ago.

A Personal Journey: Challenges and Successes

Dr. Cean initially planned to marry by his early thirties but his demanding medical career made it difficult to find the right partner. After two failed embryo transfers in India in 2012, he pursued surrogacy in Panama, where the cost was approximately two-thirds of U.S. rates. His twins were born on August 30, 2013, with Cean using his own sperm, establishing a biological connection to his children.

He describes the experience as indescribable: “It’s otherworldly, worth a thousand bucks, a million bucks. It’s hard to put into words.” His story demonstrates that with determination, planning, and access to global reproductive options, single men can achieve parenthood.

The Role of Surrogacy Agencies

Stephanie Scott, executive director of Simple Surrogacy in Dallas, notes that men like Dr. Cean are increasingly common among their clients. Agencies play a vital role in guiding single men through legal, medical, and logistical steps, including international surrogacy options.

We provide access to carefully screened gestational carriers, IVF coordination, and legal assistance to ensure parental rights are fully protected.

Breaking Stereotypes and Expanding Family Possibilities

While surrogacy for single men may still be less visible than traditional paths to parenthood, stories like Dr. Cean’s illustrate that fatherhood is attainable outside conventional relationships. Advances in reproductive technology, combined with professional guidance from experienced surrogacy agencies, make it possible for men to fulfill their dream of having children, even as their biological clocks continue to tick.
